Dan Fogelberg passed away, yesterday at the age of 56. I can't begin to tell you how much his music has meant to me, and from his official website, thousands from around the world. "Danny" was a true artist. I being "only 45" didn't discover his music until I was 29. I had heard his radio hits and sang along with so many of us, as he Joked about his best selling hit" Longer" was now an "elevator song" and said it was his least favorite. Danny sang about the environment before it became a house-hold word, also celebrated and honored Native American History and spirituality.
Dan's song about his father, "Leader of the Band" is so beautiful! I know you've sang along. This song was a touching tribute to his father, Lawrence who reluctantly gave his son his blessing, as Danny dropped out of college to run off to L.A. to find his music. Danny found himself in the circle of such guys(maybe you've heard of them: Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Crosby Nash and Young and others of that "generation". Danny cut an album and soon found that L.A. wasn't his kind of town, and on his way home, found himself stranded in the Colorado mountains. He promised that someday he would returen to Colorado to stay; he did. He divided his time between his home in Colorado(near Durango) and Maine; where he loved to sail.
Dan found his soul-mate, Jean. Although they did not have many years together, he was happy! so many of his songs told stories of "how could we make love stay?". He found that love with Jean.
When Dan announced his diagnosis in 2004, he braved a battle with spirit of a warrior, just as in his song, "The Spirit Trail".
I was blessed to hear and see Dan in concert, about five times, and oh how sweet! and oh what energy! he rocked! and was a sight for sore eyes. A humble man of music; a legacy; a man of conviction; a man who walked the spirit trail. He travels on....
